Joseph "Joe" Peter Smith, lovingly known as "Smokin Joe The Living Legend," passed away peacefully at his home in Wautoma, Wisconsin, on March 31, 2026, with his devoted wife Nancy by his side. Born on January 20, 1941, in Rockford, Illinois, Joe's life was marked by dedication to family, community, and the passions that brought him joy.
Joe was the beloved son of Faye and Mary Smith. At the age of seven, in 1948, his family moved to a farm in Wild Rose, Wisconsin, where he embraced the responsibilities and rewards of farm life. His youth was shaped by the rhythms of agricultural work, which instilled in him a strong work ethic and appreciation for the land. In 1955, at 14 years old, Joe’s family relocated to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where he attended Roosevelt Junior High School. It was here that he met Nancy Lee Galle, the woman who would become his wife and lifelong companion. Their marriage in May 1960 endured an extraordinary 65 years, a testament to their enduring love and partnership.
Joe devoted over four decades of his career to Mercury Marine, serving as a second-shift Heat Treat Plant Foreman, a role in which his leadership and expertise were deeply valued. Following this, he devoted more than fifteen years to working at Kwik Trip, further exemplifying his steadfast commitment and work ethic.
Joe's interests and hobbies reflected a zest for life; he found great enjoyment in hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, and hobby farming. He had a particular talent for breathing new life into old snowmobiles and tractors, a passion that connected with a community of enthusiasts and allowed him to share his skills generously.
His involvement in the broader community was extensive and impactful. Joe was a member of several organizations, including the Thrashers Association. He served as president of the Antique Snowmobile Club of America and was the founder of the Vintage Garden Tractor Club of America. These roles were sources of pride and reflected his passion for preserving history and fostering community among like-minded individuals.
Throughout his life, Joe was known for his remarkable ability to forge and maintain friendships. Many of his friends recall his unique talent for storytelling, sharing tales with meaning and joy that brought people together. Affectionately referred to as "Archie Bunker"—a nickname given with fondness—Joe’s wit and straightforward manner made a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Above all, Joe was a man who put his family first. He was a guiding presence, always ready to offer advice and a helping hand whenever needed. He is survived by his cherished wife Nancy Smith; his sons, Michael Smith (Eva) and Matthew Smith (Rebecca); and his daughter Kathleen Reinecke (Joseph). He also leaves behind thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, whose lives he touched deeply.
Joe was preceded in death by his son Patrick Smith; his parents, Faye and Mary Smith; and his brothers Elmer Smith and Francis Smith.
Joseph Peter Smith’s life was one of quiet strength, generosity, and profound devotion. He will be remembered with great respect and affection by all who had the privilege to know him. His legacy endures in the family he cherished, the community he enriched, and the many lives he touched.
