James Michael Unger

James Michael “Jim” Unger, age 76, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026.

Jim spent his final years living on his dream property on a lake in Mt. Morris, Wisconsin. It is a place that brought him endless happiness and reflected his love of hard work, the outdoors, and simple living.

Born to Edwin and Susan (Knapek) Unger, Jim developed a strong work ethic that would define his life. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force Reserves before beginning a career as a draftsman. No matter what he was doing, Jim believed in doing it right and never shied away from hard work.

On November 22, 1969, Jim married the love of his life, Jean (Kelpin) Unger. Together they shared more than 56 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to their family. They raised four children and created a lifetime of treasured memories.

Jim is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Jean; his children, Kimberly Hanson (Kevin), Sarah Harwood, James Unger (Kate), and Adam Unger; his cherished grandchildren, Hayden, Benjamin, Claire, and Christopher; and his sisters, Carol Berg (Bill) and Ellen Unger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Susan Unger; his brother, Edwin Unger; and his sister, Catherine Lesperance (Steven).

To know Jim was to know someone who simply never stopped moving. He was happiest with a project in front of him: working on his beloved property, driving his tractor, tinkering in his pole barn, or finding the next thing that needed fixing. His dream property wasn’t just where he lived; it was where he poured his heart, time, and talents into creating something special for his family.

Above all else, Jim loved his family. He worked tirelessly to provide for those he loved and quietly taught the value of dedication, perseverance, and responsibility through his example. While he was known for his incredible work ethic, he was equally known for his sense of humor. He could always find a way to make people laugh, often delivering one of his signature lines at just the right moment.

Jim’s legacy is one of love, hard work, resilience, laughter, and family. He leaves behind not only countless memories but also a lifetime of lessons, traditions, and stories that will continue to be shared for generations. His family will forever cherish the example he set as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing Jim is at peace. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
