Wautoma

Howard Dayton Johnson, 97, of Wautoma, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026. Howard was born on May 16, 1928, in Rockford, Illinois, to Dayton and Clara Johnson. He grew up in Rockford and later married his high school sweetheart, Shirley A. Wallin, on July 1, 1950 – a love story that would span a lifetime. Howard attended Michigan State University and was an avid Spartans fan. In 1951 he received his draft notice during the Korean war. Answering the call to serve, he enlisted in the Navy reserves and faithfully fulfilled his duty until 1953. Howard was a hard-working and respected businessman, owning and operating White Bear Cleaners and Dyers for many years. He built a strong reputation in the dry-cleaning industry through his dedication, honesty, and commitment to excellence.

After retiring early, Howard and Shirley made their home in Wautoma, Wisconsin, where they enjoyed many happy years living on Crystal Lake. He loved fishing, golfing, cross-country skiing, swimming, and all things nature provided. His family will remember his favorite saying, “It’s always a beautiful day at Crystal Lake.” Howard had many sayings and stories to tell, but one of his favorite stories began at birth when he was named the cutest baby in a contest in Rockford, Illinois – an honor he proudly remembered and talked about throughout his life. Howard was a kind and loving man whose warmth and generosity touched everyone he met. From his humble beginnings to his final days, he remained a man of character, compassion, and humor. He made friends wherever he went and was always there for anyone in need – especially his children, whom he loved deeply.

Howard is survived by his children, Dayton (Eileen) Johnson, Judy (Jon) Carlson, Jerry Johnson, Susan (Mike) Murphy, along with several grandchildren, and great grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy.

The family extends special thanks to his son, Jerry Johnson, for his devoted care, love, and support, and to St. Croix Hospice, and the VA. Howard’s legacy of love, kindness, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

The celebration of life is being planned for July 18, 2026, in Wautoma, Wisconsin, with details to be shared at a later date. Memorials can be made in Howard’s name to the Crystal Lake Memorial Fund at: CLC, PO Box 577, Wautoma WI 54982 or the VA at: William S. Middleton Memorial Hospital, 2500 Overlook Terrace, Madison, WI 53705.
