Harold W. Smith

Dedicated husband, loving father and awesome grandpa, Harold W. Smith, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 26, 2010 at Saint Michael's Hospital after a courageous battle with pneumonia.

Harold was born May 28, 1920 to Harvey and Amy (McGown) Smith in Plover, WI. He graduated from P.J. Jacobs (Emerson) High School, Stevens Point, WI in 1938. He joined the Army Air Corps on January 14, 1942, as a mechanic. He served in North Africa and achieved the rank of Technical Sgt. with the 1624th Ordnance Support and Maintenance Company. He was discharged on October 5, 1945.

He married June M. Smith on June 14, 1947. They lived in Almond, WI until moving to Bancroft, WI in October 1951 where they have resided ever since.

He worked as a mechanic at Arden Pohl's Ford dealership in Almond after High School until he was drafted by the Army Air Corps. Upon returning from the war he worked as a mechanic at several area businesses in Stevens Point and Bancroft. He then opened his own repair shop in Bancroft which he operated until 1963. Harold then started working for Paramount Farms until he retired in 2006 at the age of 86.

Harold is survived by his wife, June. His two sons: Larry (Rosemary) Smith, Almond, WI and James (Carrie) Smith, Stevens Point, WI. Four Grandchildren: Amanda (Steve) Brajdic, Berlin, WI, Jennifer Smith, Brandon Smith and Jason Smith, all of Stevens Point, WI and four Great-Grandchildren: Marlene, Dakota, Nathaniel & Tarren. Nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Amy; Brothers - Waldo (Irene), Leonard & Howard (Jean) and Sisters - Evelyn (Darrel) & Marian. Also, a number of aunts and uncles.

Harold enjoyed spending time fixing cars, fishing, hunting, and spending time outside in his younger years. He also enjoyed watching football, baseball, Indy car racing and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Harold had a great sense of humor and a kind and caring personality which will be missed and remembered by all those who knew and loved him.

Friends may call at the Leikness & Stahl Funeral Home in Plainfield from 4 to 8 pm Friday, April 30th. Visitation at the Bancroft Baptist Church at 1 pm, Saturday, May 1st. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm. Burial at the Plainfield Cemetery.

Harold's family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff and doctors in the ICU and on the 5th Floor at Saint Michael's Hospital for their compassion and wonderful care that they gave Harold during his stay.
